Super Shot Soccer [PS1]

Super Shot Soccer [PS1]

Released at the height of the 2002 FIFA World Cup and late in the PlayStation's life, comes this title with Captain Tsubasa-alike or superhuman soccer players coming from all over the world.

The game features over 30 national teams (those who have qualified for the 2002 World Cup) that have at least two special powers (some of the special or elite teams like the Hong Kong team are hidden) ranging from special passes to protective abilities to a boost in speed to auxiliary skills to even the goalkeeper shooting a little spirit-bomb type attack that mows down players in an exaggerated Shaolin Soccer fashion.

The player also has a few typical customizable options, but it's main draw is the special abilities and team match-ups.

The moves for each team are based on their country's symbols, sights, and culture. For example, the Scandinavian teams can change player into a hulking Viking boat or the Brazilians can change into the Christ the Redeemer statue to temporarily block a path to goal.

Special abilities can be done with L1 plus either Triangle, Square, or "X". Different special moves use different amounts of players' teams special energy. Also, every team has a powerful player with an "S" over their head, who can make attacks they specialize in more powerful.

The players can also use old-fashioned passes and footwork to outmaneuver its opponent, though characters move a little stiffly, especially on turns. It was done in part to simulate more realistic movement in the sport.

Rising Zan - The Samurai Gunman [PS1]

Rising Zan - The Samurai Gunman [PS1]

Protagonist Zan fights using a revolver named "Johnny No More" (also the title of the game's theme song) in his left hand and a katana named "Demon Slayer" in his right.

The player can rescue hostages scattered around the level, perform several combos combining sword and gun attacks and make "All Button Events" in which all buttons in the controller must be pressed quickly to fill a bar in a limited time.

Zan also has a bar that raises several levels, which allows him to execute "Hustle Mode" in which his sword grows to a much longer length, his attack power increases, and his speed shoots up considerably, allowing him to run and attack at extremely high speeds.

Gran Turismo [PS1]

Gran Turismo [PS1]

Gran Turismo is fundamentally based on the racing simulator genre.

The player must maneuver an automobile to compete against artificially intelligent drivers on various race tracks. The game uses two different modes: Arcade Mode and Simulation Mode (Gran Turismo Mode in PAL and Japanese versions). In the arcade mode, the player can freely choose the courses and vehicles they wish to use. Winning races unlocks additional cars and courses.

However, simulation mode requires the player to earn different levels of driver's licenses in order to qualify for events, and earn credits (money), trophies and prize cars by winning race championships.

Winning one particular championship also unlocks a video and a few additional demonstration tracks. Credits can be used to purchase additional vehicles, and for parts and tuning.

PES 2 [PS1]

PES 2 [PS1]

Pro Evolution Soccer 2

(Winning Eleven 6 in Japan and World Soccer Winning Eleven 6 in the US)

was released in October 2002 and some felt that it was a slight backwards step from the original Pro Evolution Soccer

Others argued that it had improved. The pace of gameplay was much faster than in the game's older sibling, with sharper turns and quicker reactions to tackles.

It also included a training session mode. Extra clubs were added, with an extra Master League division. There were two new commentators, Peter Brackley and Trevor Brooking, but this aspect of the game was criticised for the commentators' inaccuracies and tendency to speak over each other. The licensing was much the same, but infamously all Dutch players were called ‘Oranges’, because Konami did not hold the rights from the Royal Dutch Football Association, for use from Dutch players.

Also, unlike in the original game, the "unofficial" club names stopped using obvious city names (e.g. Manchester United was Manchester, Real Madrid was Madrid etc.), and instead used very ambiguous names (e.g. Manchester United were now Aragon, Liverpool became Europort and West Ham became Lake District).

The edit mode included a club editor which offset this problem to some extent, with editable kits and logos as well as club and player names. The game notably included tracks from Queen: We Will Rock You and We are the Champions.

A PlayStation version was also released, which was again a minor update of its predecessor, and was the last Pro Evolution Soccer release for the original PlayStation.

Resident Evil Survivor [PS1]

Resident Evil Survivor [PS1]

The player takes control of an amnesiac protagonist, struggling desperately against overwhelming odds to stay alive and uncover his identity.
Survivor's gameplay is a combination of first-person shooter and arcade-style light gun game. The player views the environment from the perspective of the character (first person view) and moves the character through the environment with the controller.

At the same time, if the player wishes to attack an enemy or destroy an object, they press a button which allows them to control a crosshair on the screen. This crosshair can be moved to any location within the main character's line of sight. Using the G-Con 45, players move around by shooting off screen to move and the side buttons to turn, and point at the screen to shoot enemies.

The game borrows its enemies from
Resident Evil 2, featuring the zombie models from that game, as well as creatures such as Lickers, the Ivy plants, Moth Giants and Tyrants. In addition, Survivor also reintroduces the original Hunters from the first Resident Evil and features two new enemies in the form of the Umbrella Trashsweeper unit – soldiers armed with machine guns – and the Hypnos T-Type, a new Tyrant model that evolves into different forms.

The player's arsenal consists almost entirely of pistols, such as the Glock 17 and the CZ75. As the protagonist progresses through the game, the player receives larger weapons to aid in defending against ever more dangerous opposition while they make their way through Umbrella's ruined city and shadowy research labs. The game features branching paths that allow the player to determine how the story will unfold and whom they will meet along the way.

Driver 2 The Wheelman is Back [PS1] for GTA 3 fans

Driver 2 The Wheelman is Back [PS1] for GTA 3 fans

Driver 2 expands on Driver's 3-D, free-roam structure, as well as adding the ability of the character, Tanner, to step out of his car to explore on foot and commandeer other vehicles in the game's open world environments. The story missions are played separately from the take-a-ride mode where the player can explore the cities in their own time.

Missions in the game are generally vehicle-oriented, and involve trailing witnesses, ramming cars and escaping from gangsters or cops. A cutscene is shown prior to almost every mission to help advance the storyline, and thus the game plays rather like a Hollywood-style car chase movie. Although Tanner can leave his car and interact with certain elements of the environment, all violence takes place during pre-rendered scenes.

FIFA Football 2005, also known as FIFA Soccer 2005

Improving the career mode, the game was extensively advertised and released much sooner than the usual late October date to avoid proximity with the release of Pro Evolution Soccer 4 and the EA Big release, FIFA Street. While some critics still considered it to have inferior gameplay to Konami's series, it was acknowledged to have improved significantly since the 2003 edition.

The game featured a return of create-a-player mode, as well as an improved, 15 season-long career mode. The game's biggest difference compared to previous titles was the inclusion of first-touch gameplay which provided gamers the ability to perform "real-life" tricks and passes. It was also the first version to feature the full Mexican League, which boosted sales in the United States.[citation needed] The soundtrack was headlined by British DJ Paul Oakenfold, who composed the FIFA Theme especially for the game.

SUPHON FILTER 3 ps1

Once again, players get the chance to dig into some serious action-heavy anti-terrorist activities in Syphon Filter 3. If you've played the other two games in the series, you're in for pretty much of the same good game. 989 Studios and Sony have joined forces one last time on PlayStation, before they make the leap to PS2 sometime next year.

In the Syphon Filter series players control Gabe Logan, an intelligence agent for the United States Government. As Gabe, players are sent all over the world to stop the deadly Syphon Filter virus. Along the way players perform the typical saving-the-world thing, rescuing hostages, killing terrorists, and making sure good old Uncle Sam stays on top of the global food chain. Oh yeah!

In this third chapter of the Syphon Filter trilogy, Gabe Logan must defend himself against a new enemy, the U.S. government. Apparently after their last mission the Syphon Filter team was suspected of treason. Gabe's whole team is under trial by Secretary of State, Vincent Hadden, who is convinced these patriots are traitors and will do everything in his power to prove it.

Duke Nukem – Time To Kill [PS1]

image

image

Duke Nukem: Time to Kill was
released in 1998 for the Sony
Playstation.

It is made to satiate fans
while Duke Nukem Forever was in
production.

It is a third-person
shooter with platforming elements.
The gameplay and controls are very
similar to those of Tomb Raider, a fact
humorously referenced throughout
the game. Aside from Tomb Raider,
references to The Evil Dead , Monty
Python and the Holy Grail , the Back to
the Future series and The Good, the
Bad and the Ugly are also in this
game.

Fighting Force [PS1]

image

image

Fighting Force is part of the ‘beat ‘em
up’ genre.

Players control one of four
characters. They move through urban
and science fiction environments,
battling waves of oncoming enemies
with weapons ranging from fists and
bottles to knives, chairs and guns. The
player can make some choices as to
which territory to travel through.
The four characters have various
reasons for taking on Dr. Zeng, a
criminal mastermind with an army at
his command.

The action starts with a
police cordon around Zeng’s office
skyscraper, moving to such locales as
a shopping mall, subway and Coast
Guard base before finally ending at
the top of Zeng’s island headquarters.

Destruction Derby 2 [PS1]

image

image

Destruction Derby 2 is the sequel to
the Sega Saturn, PlayStation and PC
title, Destruction Derby.

Here the
player must race on up to seven
different circuits, in a range of modes,
similar to its predecessor.

The modes
are Wrecking Racing (where the player
must destroy or spin the other
competitors), Stock Car (a typical race
where it’s 1st to the flag) and
Destruction Derby, which is based
around the crash arenas.

Commentator Paul Page performed as
the announcer.
Destruction Derby 2 was added to the
PlayStation Platinum range in 1997.

Originally the game was released in a
double-CD cover (even though the
game was only on one CD), but the
platinum range version was released
in an ordinary PlayStation cover.

Dino Crisis 2 [PS1]

image

image

Dino Crisis 2 is a third-person shooter
meaning that the player controls
characters in a third person view, yet
the perspective changes with
movement into new areas and fields
of view as the game uses
predetermined camera angles.

The
game also departs more from the
survival horror of the first Dino Crisis
and is more action-oriented, with
more open areas, more items and
less emphasis on puzzles.

As players kill dinosaurs in succession,
countering attacks and avoiding
damage in areas, they can earn
“Extinction Points” that act as a form
of in-game currency that tally up as
player moves between locations.

Throughout the game the player can
locate and use computer stations that
act as save point where players can
save and load games, along with
spending Extinction Points on new
weapons, upgrades, health packs and
ammunition.

There are also bandages
that are used to prevent bleeding that
occur when a player takes damage
from certain attacks that results in
slow draining of the health bar.

There are two forms of weapons in
the game, main and sub-weapons,
meaning the player can only equip
one of each at a time. Main weapons
provide the most damage and are
used for the majority of attacks, for
example shotguns, flamethrowers
and rifles whereas sub-weapons are
used to get past obstacles, like the
machete for cutting plant vines and
the firewall gun that creates a
temporary wall of fire against foes.

Over the course of the game, players
will switch roles between Regina and
Dylan, who have different weapons,
making some passages blocked for
one but accessible for the other.

Among the third person shooter
gameplay are sections of on rails
shooting, such as a chase where the
player shoots at dinosaurs that are
chasing an automatically driven
vehicle and, like the previous game,
several puzzles.

Throughout the
game, the player finds data files and
documents that progress the story
and give details of certain areas.
Hidden “Dino Files” can also be
found; these go into detail about each
dinosaur in the game.

Upon collecting
all the available Dino Files, the player
is granted unlimited ammunition for
weapons on the next play through.

Marvel Vs. Capcom – Clash Of Super Heroes [PS1]

image

image

The game was developed in late 1997
and first released in January 1998.

Unlike the previous game in the series,
the point character of a Marvel vs.
Capcom team cannot summon the
offscreen partner for an assist attack;
instead, an assist character is
randomly selected before the match
begins. This character can be
summoned a limited number of times
in battle to attack the opponent in
parallel. Codes can be used to force
the system to select a certain assist
character.

The Duo Team Attack allows a player
to control both characters on his or
her team simultaneously for a brief
period of time; the characters has
unlimited use of their super moves
during this time.

Since some
characters have hard-to-avoid super
moves that do substantial damage if
blocked, the Duo Team Attack can
lead to tactics that are oriented
around activating it before an
opponent could. Since the PlayStation
version only allows one character to
play a point, a Duo Team Attack will
call the assist character repeatedly
without cost during its duration.
